Slow Tears & Fast Prayers

Looking into the mirror is a private act we all experience. I have created an intimate space for a private exchange to take place between persons and their reflection through a two way mirror. It offers a moment of introspection and self-exploration. At the same time it blurs the lines between reality and representation, inviting participants to confront themselves in a unique way.

AN INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE

In my latest series, Slow Tears & Fast Prayers, I've transformed my barn into an intimate space for a meaningful exchange between strangers and their reflections. As an artist, I invite individuals to confront themselves in a two-way mirror, while experiencing heightened emotions of their choosing. Each participant selects a collection of 5 to 6 songs to accompany their session, guiding their emotional journey as they engage with their reflection. I invite each sitter to bypass words and delve into the depths of their emotions through expression and movement.

Unlike my previous work, which focused on reenacting my childhood memories, Reflections centers on the raw emotions of others in the present moment. It's a journey of connection and exploration, bridging the gap between past and present, pain and healing

The title holds a myriad of meanings for me – it's a moment of pause, a time for introspection and release. It symbolizes transitions and bridges the gap between darkness and hope. Through this series, I aim to capture the essence of the human experience, offering a space for profound self-reflection and emotional exploration. It’s also a time for grateful reflections or pleading prayers.

“The experience of looking into the mirror felt free yet introspective. I was able to compartmentalize in a good way. It gave me the space to separate and for a few minutes, look at myself, almost judge myself. It was very different than looking into a camera lens even though I knew you were there on the other side with a camera.” -Alex
